19 December 2003

We'll be performing apache upgrades on server 7 through 15.
12AM GMT we start with server 7. We'll be upgrading next by number servers every 2.5 hours.

No major downtime expected except apache restarts.

Excellent! This is almost the kind of notification I would like to see. I say "almost" because the notification came out AFTER the process had already started. At least I THINK it has. When you say December 19 at 12 AM GMT, is that early FRIDAY morning or late Friday night/Saturday morning??. If you had said 1201 (instead of 1200) it would be clearer.

Anyway, if your schedule successfully followed your "every 2.5 hours", we would have::
server 7 at 1200 AM GMT(actually 0000 in 24 hour time)
server 8 at 0230 GMT (0730 EST)
server 9 at 0500 GMT (1000 EST)
server 10 at 0730 GMT (1230 EST)
server 11 at 1000 GMT (1500 EST)
etc.

At 1018 EST, my cPanel shows that server 10 re-started 14 minutes ago, which would be the correct reboot time for server 9, not server 10. Close enough.

Anyway, I do truly appreciate this communication, as it would help explain any anomalies or problems any of my clients might report.

Thanks again and keep up the good work!!

Sorry, but we did not started with upgrades yet, because we had a hack atempt on server 10. And reboot you noticed was because we did server cleanup.

As for now I strongly recommend to all to upgrade their phpBB and invisionBoard installations to the latest versions and consider disabling upload features, because all hack attempts we noticed were through uploading exploits using customers insecure php scripts.

There will be an additonal notice about proceeding with apache upgrades.
Serge
We continue with apache upgrades starting from 20 PM GMT

Would the following, therefore, be the anticipated schedule?
I am assuming you have servers 7 through 17 inclusive, no skips.

I realize work could proceed faster or slower and the schedule may shift some.
But at least the following gives us an idea of activity over the next 24 hours.
I suggest you update us by posting the actual start and end time of each server as it occurs.

server 10 at 12-20-03 / 0330 GMT (12-19-03 / 2230 EST) my server
server 11 at 12-20-03 / 0600 GMT (12-20-03 / 0100 EST)

At the moment all servers has upgraded apache and php.
There were no downtime caused by the ongoing updates.

JIM

Thank you for trying to make us be more exact with scheduled upgrades.
Sorry, but we were overhelmed with server atacks last week and had a peak yesterday. There was a rush for everythin.

Hope we finally not just took attacks under control not allowing continuous downtime but also cut all possible holes via customers insecure scripts that could attrackt more customers. Though never could be 100% sure.

Once again thanks to everybody for understanding and support.
Happy holidays!
