Full Version: Installing a bulletin board
Hostony Board > General Support > General Support

I recently spent an enormous amount of time and frustration trying to install a bulletin board on the new server "66.98.144.44", trying to use CPanel and a lot of interraction from one of the hostony techs. This was very easy on the old server involving just a click of the mouse in the CPanel.

For some reason the board software installation using the new CPanel isn't complete so the configuration that links the phpBB software to the database never becomes available in order to complete the installation... so this requires a bit more than just a "click of the mouse" in the CPanel GUI interface.

I found it's so much easier just to go to the phpBB site, "phpBB.com" and download the software and install it yourself. Here's what to do:

1.) Download software to your own PC as a .zip and then open archive.
2.) Make a directory in your domain where you want the forum, for example "mydomain/myForum" and copy everything from your PC into that directory... be sure to use "Binary mode" since there are graphics included in some directories.
3.) Use CPanel to create an empty database and remember the name. It may be easier to also create a new username and password but don't forget to also assign it to the database.
4.) Open a browser and browse to "mydomain/myForum" which will automatically load the configuration screen.
5.) Fill in all the information remembering to use just the exact word "localhost" for the entry related to Host. For some reason I tried "Hostony.com" the first time around.
6.) You will be given some options about what to do with the config.php file that is created and the easiest is to download it to your PC and then use FTP to upload it to, "mydomain/myForum".
7.) You will be asked to delete both the "install" and the "contrib" directories which you must do using either CPanel or your FTP software before proceeding. After that just browse to your new forum and enter the same username and password you use to access your CPanel to login to the forum as administrator.
8.) Good Luck!

I haven't yet tried the IPB but will, now that you mentioned it. The option to install the IPB wasn't available in my CPanel on the new server, but was on the old server.

This experience with installing a message board and the linking with database and all the other that goes with it is relatively new to me but I'm catching on fast... :-)

I was just pretty much amazed at how simple the whole process is and now realize how handicapped I had become by not looking into it further to start with. Although I'm a programmer by profession, it's been many years since I've done any web-type but it's beginning to come back and I'm really glad to find out that a lot of it has been made a whole lot easier than it use to be.

Okay... so now I've tried installing the IPB, and it was very easy and I really like the look and feel.

Thanks for suggesting it.
