Hey, um.... Does anyone know how long it's gonna take before my Dad's sites are back up? I sent a ticket in and was told about the DDOS attack on the server and was shown that everything is still there, but how long does it take before everything is back to normal? I'm supposed to be working on that site today. (I'm getting paid for this one.) Help? (www.audreysgait.com)

As you may know, my company hosts with a couple hosting companies.

I know that another host we use has an affordable system named "IP tables" which has blocked their servers from around 95% of DOS/DDOS Attacks for a year +.

Maybe HOSTONY could have these installed in the DC's they use, and customers can have IP Tables on the server for a minimal charge. smile.gif

Hi Mark....

Do you know how long this stuff should take? Is it supposed to take all day?

I don't mind a day off wink.gif , but I am a little worried about the downtime. If it was my website I really wouldn't mind the wait but because this isn't mine... Well, you're in business for this stuff so you know what I mean. smile.gif

Before I could even answer, they're back up! Not bad.

DOS Attacks, aka DDOS Attacks can range from a few minutes to days.

In one case, one of the first DOS Attacks lasted or weeks. The attack was on Register.com. Stated Here.

Something that's really horrible is how your customers can cause them sometimes. They use one thing called "SQL Injection," using a string of code to "hack" into the server. It brings the server down from the inside!

There's alot of information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DoS_attack

That technology I mentioned seems to not be so popular, but is it growing. Their site is here. No, its not an affiliate link.

IP Tables uses packet filtering technology to keep commonly known IP address from hackers filtered out, and quickly and effectively keeps out the bad stuff. That's all I know about it. It is also said that it slows down your server LAN speed by a little - 1/50 or something small like that.

The morel of the story is to be appreciative that DOS attacks with HOSTONY and quick and painless. Not like that 2 weeks with Register.com! biggrin.gif

That's scarey!!!

I'm building my dad's sites with just plain old html and CSS. I'm sort of a "low tech" website builder! laugh.gif
So there's nothing dangerous on the sites I'm building for him at all except what he's selling. (He's an antique gun dealer.) laugh.gif

I do worry about my own site though.... I briefly used a messageboard that kept getting bombarded with spam. I would carefully go in and remove each one. Then the folks who made the messageboard (I can't remember now which company it was) said there was a security issue with the darned thing and wanted me to remove it and put up the new version and blah blah blah.... I just deleted the whole thing. There just wasn't any point in messing with it. I was getting more junk and spam than actual entries from real people. I had the same thing happen with a guestbook.... I use Nucleus weblogs and those get spam and junk too... I tried using special security codes and everything but in the end I'm just better off not allowing comments on anything. It's kind of a shame. If anyone knows a better way to allow interaction that doesn't involve lots of pruning of spam or worrying about security issues I'd be interested in learning about it.

Yes! I agree! 2 weeks downtime and my Dad and his wife wouldn't be too happy with me! I asked them to sign up with Hostony because they're the best place I've ever used and I'm happy and comfortable here. (I think they went with Hostony on these new sites to make me happy. They already have space elsewhere...)

Oh well... Break time's over! biggrin.gif Back to work for me!
