Full Version: Grr.... More hotlinking trouble...

I'm having trouble with those $#&@ MySpace.com people again. This time it's my music videos. I have a series of music videos for my band Orphic Endeavors up on the site and for the first time ever I'm having trouble with someone linking directly to them. The funny part is this guy is apparently trying to impress some girl (?) with MY music video? Anyway, I've had trouble with MySpace.com many times before and they totally ignore me. In the past I emailed the company themselves as well as the people hotlinking to the images and I finally gave up and turned on hotlink protection which was something I didn't want to have to do. Now it looks like it's happening again only this time with wmv files. And hotlink protection doesn't seem to be working on those, so I did a little research... Is there any way to protect video files? Actually, I should ask is there any EASY way...

Honestly, I don't mind people showing the videos or using the pictures, but if they would just download them and put them up on their own site.... Of course, that's too much trouble, I'm sure. Grrr........

Anyway, any advice would sure help. Thanks....

I'd like to add one more thing.... If anyone knows of a way to block MySpace.com from my site altogether I'd be super happy. I'd rather block that domain and everyone under it than block out the rest of the world.

Grr.... I really can't stand that place. dry.gif

Okay... I think I fixed it.... Nevermind. smile.gif

Last time I tried to block it via IP it couldn't resolve the address, but this time all three domains resolved. Ha ha!!!! No more hotlinking from them.

You can give a look to the "IP Deny" tool in CPanel.
You can put the domain name, the tool will try to resolve the ip address...
bpgisme
Yep! smile.gif That's what I did! I had tried that before a few months back but it didn't work. This time it did work! Yay!

Now I'm trying to decide if I can safely turn off hotlink protection for the site. If I have the MySpace IP blocked, they can't access the images, but if I turn off hotlinking protection I can post images on forums and such again, right? I'm just not too sure it's worth the risk....

In one of my websites i set hotlink protection, but i allow images from one directory to allow hotlinking (like avatars, etc)

I just allow hotlink, and then create a directory, and then i create a ".htaccess" file into the "free hotlinking" directory with:

CODE
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule .*\.(zip)$ - [F,NC]

it work for me.
please try it, and then you can hotlink and image from your directory here in the forum and see if it's ok smile.gif

Thanks Martin! I'll give that a try!

Hey, can you answer a question for me? Do I need to put a robot.txt file in every folder of my site? There's a tremendous number of bots scanning the site.... My numbers are crazy and it's all because of these bots. My unique visitors so far this month is 1743 and number of visits: 3634, 19862 pages viewed (17465 traffic not viewed), and 52753 hits (22430 traffic not viewed).... See, I don't mind search engines spidering the site, but I get an absolute ton of spam email and lots of sites like this: http://online-casino.anyticketusa.com/ (linked to my site 64 times!) and this: http://texas-poker.jixx.de/ (linked to my site 61 times) keep linking to my site. What can I do to stop this? I don't even understand why or how that works....

I don't mind like Google or Yahoo image search spidering the site. I do a lot of my own searches via image search. I do mind all these prescription drug and gambling sites linking to me. I can't figure out why or how that works or what possible benefit it is to do something like that anyway. I'd like to fix it.

Thanks,
-Bonnie

as i know, the bots search for a robots.txt file only in the "/" of the domains, not subdirs.
You can find robots.txt files and download it.

greetings.

Thanks so much Martin! I'll give it a try!

(Thanks for the help on the hotlinking issue too!)

I'm still working on that Robot.txt thing, (thanks) but in the meantime, those darn MySpace people are still hotlinking my video. mad.gif

I don't really want to have to change the name of the video because my experience with that has been that they go to my site and find the darned thing they're after and link to it again. I did some research and I see lots of others having the same trouble with Windows Media Player files. There has to be a way to fix this. I mean we get so much bandwidth here at Hostony that for a little place like mine it's probably not really a problem unless the page gets outrageous hits or something, but still... It's the principle of the thing. I guess, in the end, all I can do is go to MySpace and claim a copyright violation?

-Bonnie

***UPDATE!!!! I think I got it.... I added "wmp" to my list of forbidden file extensions in hotlink protection. I had added "wmv" but not "wmp". I went and checked and sure enough my "thief.jpg" came up instead! Yes! biggrin.gif I'm happy now! I'll go work on that robot.txt file now.

Congrats, Bonnie biggrin.gif
