Full Version: A question about HTML

It has been so long since I have actually written HTML code for a website that I have forgotten a few things.

Can someone reccomend a good tutorial site?

I am designing a website for the store I manage and I am using frames to keep the page divided into 3 different areas. The top and left will remain unchanged while the right frame will show whatever the visitor clicks on in the left frame menu.

My overworked brain has forgotten the code that I need to use in the a href part of the code. I know target="_blank" opens in a new window, but my mind refuses to remember anything else. tongue.gif

Sorry for the rambling post but it has been a long day.

BTW, the frameset names are:
banner (top)
buttons (left)
main (right)

If anyone feels like visiting the site and leaving feedback the URL is http://www.subway2729.com/frames.html

None of the links work and I still have to make the banner and background images but any comments are welcome.

Thanks,
Chris

HTML Goodies, VERY nice site.
Its where I learned HTML for the first time smile.gif

I hope this doesn't sound rude, but I have to be honest - my first HTML tip for you is to not use frames. If you want to be taken seriously, it's a bad idea. They screw things up for people using JAWS or other text-to-speech programs, as well as people using text-based browsers or just older browsers in general. Plus, they're just annoying.

I'm not trying to tell you how to run your site or anything, but since you're asking for advice... anyway, I'd recommend learning to use tables or preferably divs and make a nice layout out of those.

Here are some sites to check out:

http://www.w3schools.com/
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_layout.asp (Basics on tables)
http://htmlgoodies.com/tutors/tbl.html (More on tables)
http://webdesign.about.com/library/weekly/aa102102a.htm (Div tags)
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/practicalcss/ (About div tags, fairly complicated)

I second Dag. Frames are the worst if you're learning HTML. If you know how to use Frames, it'll go well for you, but if you don't? Eh, move on to something easier. Frames are a hassle sometimes, and it'll screw up your site.

I second this. HTML Goodies has excellent tutorials. There was a time when they also had a great forum for people to ask questions and receive help. I used to be quite active in that forum and it was always fun to answer a newcomer's "How do I make text blink?" question with "You don't... blinking text ######s." They've changed it to some "mentor pages" crapola now, but you can still find just about anything you need to know there.

Thanks for all of the helpful links. I will be checking all of them out.

And BTW, I scrapped the frames idea. 3 of the 4 friends I had check out the site hated the frames.

Guess that says something about what my customers might feel about it.

Back to the drawing board, smile.gif Guess I'll stick with tables and such.

Thanks again
Chris
