I'm leaning towards your Special package under Linux. It seems to fit my needs better than anything I've seen. There are a few things that are unclear to me though:

I know the basics of Apache configuration, but have only used it on machines where I had full access and could edit the main config file myself. Which parts of Apache administration will I be able to control if I buy your shared hosting service?

Can I allow script execution on a per-directory basis?

Where can I learn more about the web-based email client software you are using? I'd like to find reviews of that software, since some of them are really good while some others stink.

What quotas apply to a Special account? Is the only rule that everything must fit into 3000MB, or are there any special quotas on things like mail or databases?

Can all ten different domain names work as ten entirely different sites, or can they only be synonyms for the same site?

Can subdomains work as sites of their own? (from a surfer perspective)

I already own a few domain names and have prepaid for them for several years ahead. Can I stay with my current domain name registrar and just use Hostony for hosting?

Can I write a Perl script which sends emails that appear to come from an address under my own domain name? ( I know Perl, I'm just asking if there are any obstacles that will prevent me from doing it)

Can i write a Perl script which can process all emails sent to a certain address under my domain name?

Which 10 pre-installed scripts are available?

Best regards,

Fredrik

I know the basics of Apache configuration, but have only used it on machines where I had full access and could edit the main config file myself. Which parts of Apache administration will I be able to control if I buy your shared hosting service?

You will be able to administer your vitrual hosts with .htaccess files only. Also some options like redirection, aliases are available in control panel tools

Can I allow script execution on a per-directory basis?

As for cgi scripts thay are allowed to run from cgi-bin folders only. Every subdomain or addon domain has own cgi-bin.

Where can I learn more about the web-based email client software you are using? I'd like to find reviews of that software, since some of them are really good while some others stink.

there are three webmail client programs are installed with linux plans:and UebiMiau for windows accounts (http://www.uebimiau.org)

What quotas apply to a Special account? Is the only rule that everything must fit into 3000MB, or are there any special quotas on things like mail or databases?

Your total quota consists of: mail size, databases, web log files and size of your private directory

Can all ten different domain names work as ten entirely different sites, or can they only be synonyms for the same site?

You can set up 10 fully separated domains and unlimited synonyms for them with Special account

Can subdomains work as sites of their own? (from a surfer perspective)

Yes, subdomains can have own content, mail and ftp.

I already own a few domain names and have prepaid for them for several years ahead. Can I stay with my current domain name registrar and just use Hostony for hosting?

You are not forced to transfer all your domains to our domain registrar. Every customer holds his domains where he does want.

Can I write a Perl script which sends emails that appear to come from an address under my own domain name? ( I know Perl, I'm just asking if there are any obstacles that will prevent me from doing it)

Can i write a Perl script which can process all emails sent to a certain address under my domain name?

Yes, you can. But there are 2 things: no spamming and flood. Also your scripts must be secure.

Which 10 pre-installed scripts are available?

To tell/say the truth, it is greater than 10:

Can subdomains work as sites of their own? (from a surfer perspective)

Yes, subdomains can have own content, mail and ftp.

from: http://hostony.com/hosting.html

A sub domain sub.yourdomain.com is another domain name that is actually part of your main domain name yourdomain.com. Sub domains can point to sub-directories of your main account.

Starting from Advanced account we allow hosting of multiple domains so in this case you can have sub domains for any of your hosted domains pointing to their sub-directories or even have sub domains as full featured domains with own separated directory tree, ftp logins, etc.

My question is, is this a typo? should it say "Starting from Special" instead of "Advanced" as the Special plan allows for 10 domains?

My interpretation of this text means that the "Special" plan does not allow for sub domains to be their own website (seperate ftp logins, log files etc).

Also, is it possible to set a quota on these seperate logins? and also, is it possible to set a bandwidth quota? This may sound like a reseller question, but I was more interested in giving my siblings and friends webspace if I was to buy hosting with you but I did not want them using too much of my allowed quota (bandwidth and storage).

And finally, I already own a seperate domain from another domain name registra, is the "addon domain" (under additional services and upgrades) fee applical? or is this just if i want more then 10 domains hosted?

Will I have full access to the zone files of my current domain once the nameservers have been set to your host?

Sorry just another question before I forget, how does excessive bandwidth work?

Will I automatically get charged for extra bandwidth used or will my site be inaccessable? can I check how much bandwidht has been used? if it does get shut down can i change the level at which it shuts down? (ie 1gig before limit) and only allow access from a specific host (ie, me)

As i know, your site will be suspended if you over use your bandwidth, but i think you can contact hostony before it happen and be charged for the extra bandwidth.

Also, you can see the used bandwidth anytime you want and you receive an auto-email alerting you about a near limit.

My interpretation of this text means that the "Special" plan does not allow for sub domains to be their own website (seperate ftp logins, log files etc).

Since the Special Plan is just that--a Special, I think they opted not to change the text of the page since the Special could go away at any time. However, that is definitely the way it works, as I have the Special and the subdomains can indeed be treated as separate accounts.

I've asked that very question, and was informed that is only available on reseller accounts.

You've got it the second time, it's only if you want more than 10 domains hosted.

Only thing I'm not sure of is the zone files questions. blink.gif

Hope this helps.

You see there is a difference between Addon domains and subdomains.
Addon domains are available only from Specail plan and upper, but subdomains can be set up using any package from our company.
Dan
Okay thanks for the replies, but my question on whether I will have access to the zone file is still unanswered.

Is that access via the web-based interface package only, or will i get raw access via ssh or similar?

The reason I ask is I want to assign type A (IPv4) and AAAA records (IPv6) and some named configuration packages i fear may not support IPv6. I also prefer working with this kind of thing from a shell rather then software packages.
Stanly
You will have access only for creation, editing and deletion of your zones (only for reseller packages).
Also you can have access to SSH but you will not be able to modify zone from it.

http://hostony.com/hosting.html (ie, not a reseller package) states that we get access to add delete and modify CNAME, A and MX records for our domains. From what I can tell, the difference from the reseller and the standard hosting packages is that the reseller package allows for your own nameserver whereas standard hosting doesnt. Is this correct?

Also, can we create reverse dns entries?
Alec
You can do it with windows shared hosting account and linux reseller account. Unfortunately shared linux doesn't provide this feature

Perhaps you should remove it from the linux shared hosting page then?
Alec
Ok, will do it. Thank you for notification
