It is very strange, but i have checked server statistic and don't find any SMTP outages during this week.
May be something wrong with your server monitor or internet provider?

i am monitoring smtp, http and pop from a server in San Francisco, i will change to another server in Chicago and i will notify you if I get the same stats in a near future.
anyways, the same server is used for check http and pop and im getting so many outages only from smtp.
i use two different isp from argentine, so i think the outages are a reality.
i will give you the reports soon, greetings

I'm seeing outages during various times of the day as well. Seems to be happening over the past couple of days.
At this moment I can't reach my SMTP server (mail.gamecellars.com).
<Waiting 2 minutes>
It just worked.
Any ideas?

I think I get the same problem. I don't have my ISP blocking port 25 as I have always sent out email with no problem. Although I do experience intermitten problems where email will not go out.
my domain is construkkt.com, it normally only lasts an few minutes and with a little patience get it to work, pressing send and recieve until it goes.
Trouble is today it's not going anywhere!!
Any answers???

If you have problems with your SMTP tell me some mailbox name and password for it.
I'll do some tests and will look at its work.

I'm still looking for a resolution to this issue. I've opened 2 tickets already and they've been closed because they think sending me a test mail has fixed the smtp issue.
Before this whole crash happened I was able to use my own website address as the smtp server in my email settings...now I cannot. Why can't I?
So...I can receive but not send......any thoughts?

could your isp be blocking outgoing port 25?
I know mine does(cox cable).
try telneting to your server on port 25
If you cant make a connection then you are blocked by your isp.

I am having outoging mail issues via SMTP as well. On ICQ you told me that it is not an SMTP issue and that was my disk space utilization, but I am not even using half of my plan space, and my email is 10MB under quota. Now, no one will reply to my ICQ's.
Have you acknowledged an SMTP issue?

Just a question...
What are you using to test? Does it test from more than one source?
For example,
does it test from your IP, from an external IP (different subnet) and maybe a 3rd reliable source as well?
If not, then your tests are skewed. That is the uptime from only one place. Routing issues happen, especially SMTP. Have you thought about the fact that you are tagging the SMTP server with an invalid request multiple times a day/hour/min? This wont help the SMTP server at all either. Your local ISP may drop port 25 packets as well from time to time if they see too many too often.
Just some things to think about.

Yes, of course
As i have said at the begining, Don't trust in the Downtime% because is checked only in 30' lapses.
But trust in the number of Outages
(In the reality, exist a lot more short outages, but the 30' lapses....)

Respect to my ISP and port 25, im using my ISP's SMTP service for a while, because Hostony's SMTP is unreliable. But you know, im a reseller, and i can't say to my clients in the welcome-email, "use your domain for pop, but use your own smtp server, because 'my' smtp don't work"
JasonJones
Oct 1 2004, 11:22 PM
I'd also like to add...
If your figures are correct that you posted, that means you are hitting the SMTP server about every 15min or so, actually a bit more... So are your tests based on 15min intervals? For example...
Its tests and it is good, waits 15min, tests again, its down, waits 15min test again, its up... Does that make your program think it was a 15min downtime when it could have just been a 30second thing?
To properly guage the downtime, you would have to have a persistent tcp connection on port 25... Impossible.. So, then the program should then do the following to give a more accurate report of the down time... Check, if it fails, then check every min till it is good, then go back to the 15min intervals. This could also fail in the downtime's favor as well... if it went down in min 3 of the 15min counter, then failed, failed for 2 more minutes, then the total downtime would be reported as 3min when it is really 14min. But you really dont have a way of measuring downtime unless you monitor the server processes and ports FROM the server in a persistent mannor.
Uptime monitors are useless from the customer's side usually...
I run programs on my servers(not here on hostony) to guage service downtimes(on my local servers here), then run reverse uptimes to the rest of the internet. So the program logs any time the smtp service stopped listening on 25, http on 80, etc... and every min send out a few pings to about 10 BIG providers... if all 10 pings fail, it sends the program into panic mode, it logs the time/date and starts a constant ping to all 10 providers till it sees replies 10 in a row from one of them, then it logs the uptime and returns to normal mode. If the service fails on 25, downtime... same with the other ports.

I have read the discussion above and I can say that there is the same situation on server #16. The SMTP server fails periodically and each time I contact support the server is restarted. It allow to fix the SMTP problem temporarily but it occurs again and again.
I saw simialr problems on this server last summer but it was fixed after 2 weeks of instability. Now (November) it looks like it comes back.
As a reseller I got reports from my customers about their SMTP's are not working correctly so it makes me sad. Please let me know if it is possible to fix this problem or I have to migrate to Virtual Dedicated account to obtain a stable SMTP service.
