Does a sub domain have to point to a directory in the main public_html directory?

Example:
public_html (main domain)
../sub (sub domain)


I have a sub domain for one of my addon domains and it would be nice have the sub domain point to a directory under my addon domain directory instead of the main directory.

Example:
public_html (main domain)
../addon (addon domain)
../../sub (sub domain)

but can they be pointed somewhere else? I have one I would like pointed to a directory under an addon domain instead of having under my main domain.

In that case you need to add this subdomain for addon domain name
