All users hosted on those servers will be compensated with 1 level up account upgrade for the amount of problems we had.
Upgrades will be performed next week once we finish resolving problems we recently met with these servers.
Thanks all for your patience and support during hard time we have.

Thank you for fixing the problem and for this generous offer to compensate us for the trouble.
However, I hope your "daily" backups will actually occur EVERY DAY from now on. Losing a week's worth of data is totally unacceptable.

I'm still having issues on this server.
I thought the problems were all resolved. As i've just moved to this host it's probably my own bad luck. typical.
The offer of compensation seems very fair. I like the fact that the problem is being worked on and that there is someone taking responsibility for the issues.
Another update of when the issue will actually be fully resolved would be appreciated.

Charlie

Sorry, but we do only weekly backups for performace reason. Full server backup requires about 20-30 hours to be done so that account structure could be restored.
During that time CPU and HDD has peak load and that's why all hosting providers do backups in non business hours when there are a little users on the server.
As for old RAID we have only fragments of data because last couple hours of its life raid did not synced data on 3 HDDs, so part of file appears in the another file, etc.

im willing to bet talim that the majority here would rather not have service failures of a 24 hour mark than account upgrades, so until you are down for a solid 24 hours , its probably best not to input your thoughts, cause its really starting to ######. I would hate to be a business and be on this machine. Pardon my abruptness but when you say your total outage is 8 minutes...it doesnt help anyone here that is still down thanks

Mar 14 2004, 07:47 PM
mmm talim, why dont you try being polite. we shouldnt have to be "glad" of having our servers down for a whole day. if you want to brown nose and say how great it is thats fine and dandy but you must have some low standards, when a server crashes and there is not even a more recent tape backup then from a week ago? thats just sad. so no he shouldnt have to "SHUTUP" becuase we all pay money for a service that hasnt been provided. hell, my site still isnt up after 24hrs of downtime and now i have to deal with data loss.
bill
Mar 14 2004, 07:51 PM
wow, if i cant get my data back this is absolutly rediculous, all other companies offer daily backup. if you guys have hardware that fails like this, it is silly not to backup more often. you say it takes up server load, but why not have it set to do backup in the middle of the night. im still in astonishment at this situation.

oh, great!
I go from 60gig transfer to 86gig transfer. meanwhile I am only doing 100mb transfers because my site is new. and all the changes I've made to attract people have just been erased.
I work 45-50hrs a week, then come home and work on site site in my spare time. I'm supposed to be happy because they're giving me something I might never use anyway? fine, upgrade my acct for the downtime. but for this dataloss they better make their service and equipment more reliable. and backup more often.

Sorry, but data from teh damaged RAID cannot be restored since they are fragmented and we were unable to put all data from 3 drives in one system, Some parts of files are mising and some are doubled.
I understand your indignation with lost of the recent data, but we hadRAID 5 with data redundantly stored over 3 drives in order to avoid user data loss. Normally when HDD fails RAID 5 restores data onm the new one. The funny thing RAID card itself damaged everything.
Sorry but we cannot do anything else for you rather then restoring weekly backup.

Will you be changing your published terms then? Because at the moment they state, and I quote "We back-up our servers on a daily basis." which based on what you are now saying is misleading and false advertising.
This is really not funny now, over 24 hours outage and no update on the main announcement thread from anyone at Hostony in over 6 hours. My site came back briefly and has now gone again.
Like many others I moved here after having problems with previous hosts, I hoped spending a bit more would mean more reliability. How can it take this long to fix a hardware problem? Why can you not load your last backup onto a standby machine, change the ip address to that of the dead server and get it running? That shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. Building a machine from scatch, messing around with RAID on the deceased server, and chaning the nameserver settings is just plain amaturish.
Please respond.
Henry.

You know, you guys have the option of doing daily backups yourself! Its not difficult or time consuming, and if you really value all your data then you'd be a fool not too. Those who want zero downtime should be running their own servers
Lets not turn this into a flame war. Hostony is very generous for the price they charge and I've never seen them get angry with even the stupidest newbies that fail to backup their own data.

I think we'll all know to backup daily now. from what i can tell most of the people who are posting in here just switched to hostony and are questioning their choice cause of the service so far.
i still would like them to live up to what they claim though, daily backups is not the same as weekly. and 99% uptime hasn't been anywhere near accurate since i've been aboard.
with that said, hopefully this is the last hiccup for a while and i'll take this as a lesson learned.
