LOL now I see it, sorry about spending your time :-/

That's quite alright...you did NOT waste my time! I am happy to learn, even if the benefits aren't immediate.

Oh I see now your point about newsletter vs a mailist, I think you can check the PHPList features list to see if it's suitable for your needs: http://www.phplist.com/details

Thank you, Martin. However, the very first item in the "details" link you sent me is:
QUOTE(http://www.phplist.com/details @ Dec 14, 2006, when I last checked it)
phplist is a one-way email announcement delivery system. It is great for newsletters, publicity lists, notifications, and many other uses. (It is different from group mailing list systems like mailman.)

It appears that nothing has changed since I last checked on this possibility.

To the people here using mail lists... Why you simply don't install the free soft PHPList (http://www.phplist.com/) ? You can found it on the Fantastico TM tool. It's a very advanced newsletter system, give it a try, and stop getting mad with the Majordomo List Manager.

This piece of soft supports all you are using now on Majordomo, plus a lot of features more, like bacth sending per time period (to keep friendly with your hosting provider AUP), and tons more.

If PHPList truly was capable of replicating all of Majordomo's features, then I would try it. The last time I checked, though, PHPList was unable to allow any member of the list EXCEPT THE OWNER to submit an item for distribution. I am dealing with a community which wishes to disseminate news and information from any of its members to all of its members, it is not ideal for PHPList's single-point-of-distribution model (a la Newsletters).

Also, why is it unreasonable to expect the hosting service to keep Majordomo (or whatever equivalent they use here) up and running? They advertise email lists as one of the services available to its hosted customers, and to me it is as important as the web server.

Also, I am not mad at Majordomo...it is software that is capable of very robust, reliable, and high-volume operation. I do, however, feel I have every right to be mad at Hostony for not monitoring and configuring the email list service to remain reliable and useful to its customers, AS ADVERTISED.

Ticket number 52248. I escalated with a complaint to supervisor after over 2 hours, and still there's no response at all from tech support.

It's the usual problem...my email lists aren't functioning, in the same way as many times before: the emails to the list are not distributed, they do not bounce, nor do they appear in the lists' archives.

Please check the email list service (MailMan, or whatever it is). Several emails have not been getting distributed.

Could you please describe the problem with more details.

EDIT Yes.

I send an email to address '[list's email address]'.

When operating normally (NOT now!), the list will deliver the email to the many people subscribed to that email list.

Right now, when mail is sent to '[list's email address]', it "disappears" and does not get delivered. It has been over twelve hours since the first of these emails have been reported as undelivered, and they are still not delivered.

When I visit the list's archive site at http://[domainname]/pipermail/[list's directoryname]/2006q4/date.html I also do not see those emails.

THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS OFTEN!! PLEASE FIX THE CAUSE, NOT JUST RESTART THE SERVICE!! This is NOT the first ticket I have sent you with this problem...I create and send this type of ticket for this problem OFTEN!

EDIT It has been two and a half hours...do you have any update?

FRANZ
2006-12-07 22:22:42
EDIT Complaint message I received the "promised response" within 15 minutes, but it was only a request for more information, which I responded to. I have not received any information or updates in about 2 hours now!

It's all I can do to help, without access to your account. You need to realize that we're just other forum members, like you.

Just because HOSTONY had some problems with their ticket system doesn't mean you need to take out your frustrations on us.
I know the feeling. Sometimes it feels like techs are just copying answers out of a book and not giving any customer service with the support.

I understand, and thanks for your offer to help. In my thread-starting message, I made it clear that this was a recurring problem:
QUOTE
My email lists are down, as they have been once or twice a week for at least several weeks now. You'd think this problem would be fixed so that your customer does not have to ask OVER and OVER again for this to get fixed. But NoooOOOOooo!

I was also quite aware that it was unlikely that a non-tech (that is, someone without admin access to the servers) would be able to help me, in addition to being frustrated with Hostony's state of service.

Once more, thank you, and apologies if my remarks were taken personally (by you).

Yay! No the people who actually know what they're doing can help you.

Make sure there isn't an auto responder, forwarder or anything setup for that account.

Also note that HOSTONY has their servers send out emails slowly, not all at once.

Yes, yes. Thanks for all those "level one" responses.

This problem happens about every week. I submit a support ticket, then I get a response from the tech like "try it now", upon which the backed up emails start arriving.

In yesterday/today's ticket I further asked if they could fix the CAUSE,not just the problem. They again fixed the problem and responded to my further request (to fix the CAUSE, not just the stoppage) with "This service had some probelm and was stoped, and we have fixed it and it is working ok." It feels like your words go in one ear and out the other.

*sigh*

I am a tech, but not for HOSTONY.
That's a bit too general. When you say "not functioning" do you mean:
- You're getting error messages upon accessing the system,
- You can't access them at all,
- They don't send to the recipients specified,
- Something else...?

Okay, I'll describe it to you this way...

A person who is subscribed to the email list sends an email TO the list.

Normal behavior is for the email to be transmitted to everyone on the list.

Current behavior is that the email disappears into nothingness. Admin interface for the lists work fine, archives are available (last message in archives is from Wed 11/22).

Martin and I will help as much as we can to fix your issues.

Please use detail, what causes the error and domain name, but do NOT give us your log in ID or password - Save those for the real techs.

My email lists are not functioning. I am talking about ListServe services. Good luck trying to help if you are not a tech!

The database problems with creating or even viewing tickets has been going on for almost 24 hours now. How long does it take Hostony to fix this???? I have lost ALL patience with them.

Yes, they appear to be unreachable. I consider this to be a grave error, as communication is the one vital ingredient to overcome customer dissatisfaction.

They DO care very much about us customers - I know from experience.

Yeah, I've been here a while and had my share of trouble.

It's just incredibly frustrating when something simple like an email listserve continually crashes, and all support does is bring it back up instead of fixing the cause of the repeated crashing. And now, there's no way of even contacting support. Twelve hours and counting since attempting to contact them!

They seem to be having a database problem. Try emailing them?

Yes, but an email to 'support@Hostony.com' seems to generate yet another ticket key, and when I check on that ticket number, the invalid key error is again shown.

I wonder if tech support will care (they've got to notice) that no tickets are being generated?

That's what I've been using...that's where I get the error, and I am assuming (due to no response from the techs) that support requests are not getting through!

I am getting the following error for each attempted support ticket I submit:

Invalid request key

My email lists are down, as they have been once or twice a week for at least several weeks now. You'd think this problem would be fixed so that your customer does not have to ask OVER and OVER again for this to get fixed. But NoooOOOOooo!

How am I to get your support? Please answer!

mad.gif My CPanel won't let me log into any accounts at all...keeps rejecting any of the username/password combinations. At least the web site is up, but I'm not currently certain of mail or email lists. SCP probably still won't let me log in either, but I'm just not going to bother with adding to the endless stream of support tickets right now. I'm both glad and sad that I'm not the only one around here going through this. I just need to get off my duff and haul my stuff to some other place. Gonna go VPS.

mad.gif What the heck is it today, folks? I can't do ANYTHING on my "new" server, 69.72.157.71. Web site didn't work at all earlier, now gives a 403 Forbidden error. Can't get to CPanel, can't get to my files through SCP, etc.etc. Worst yet, I filed ticket 29856 almost an hour and a half ago and still have not received ANY response.

I dread each and every morning these days, since it seems that so many of them start with "I have to get my Internet hosting service to get my Internet site working for me and my users...AGAIN"!!

Please check my ticket no. 29102. My site has been displaying 500 Internal Server Error for at least an hour now.

Server is 69.72.157.71 (I used to be on Server28...I don't know what server I'm on since I was moved on Monday).

Folks, there is one thing your customers expect from me and you...that is to KEEP THE WEB SITES UP. Your record at being able to do so (especially recently) is ABYSMAL!

It was down yesterday, and thank you for fixing the MySQL.

Today, the site is suddenly running into the ground (extremely slow, non-responsive). CPanel won't load, either. Interestingly, I can connect just fine via SCP.

EDIT: I guess I spoke too soon. Now it is coming up with the MySQL error screen again. CPanel is still down, though.
