customer support has been bad lately any reason?

I have not been able to access my control panel of my dedicated server ($195/month) for over a month. They keep telling me that I installed a firewall that blocks access, but I do not even know how to do it. I am looking for another company for hosting if anyone has suggestions.

you have scripts in your control panel. if you have a linux server, check out fantastico, super-easy way to install many amazing scripts.

I was chatting with Hostony support on AOL IM today, but when I asked about ruby on rails support, the person disappeared and never replied.

I really do think it is time for Hostony to get on board with Ruby on Rails. It is free to install for Hostony, and will attract new customers.

Dreamhost.com has made it available on all of their packages. I have been with Hostony for years and have 3 separate accounts with them, and don't want to move. But I need to install Typo (blog software) and it requires Ruby on Rails.

Hostony, how long will we have to wait for Ruby on Rails? Install it for us and then get Hostony linked here: RailsWebHosts

Dreamhost also offers WebDAV which is a great way to move data files through the web.

I am running Moodle installation on my VPS server. It has been plagued by slow speed. Anyone running scripts that speed up PHP applications? I saw some instructions here for eaccelerator, but am not familiar with that product.

Any advice would be appreciated.

maybe your server will be the next one (but it's not for sure  wink.gif ).

QUOTE(Dark Hedgehog @ Jul 23 2005, 09:21 PM)
Well, I was wondering if anyone knew how I could put my splash page, index.php, and make it so that when sonicdash.net is loaded, I do not need a directory for a CMS like:

http://www.sonicdash.net/home
I want it to be http://www.sonicdash.net/index.php
Anyone have any solutions?

Thank you.
*

Are you using Fantastico to install your CMS? If so, just leave the directory field blank to install into your www.sonicdash.net public_html root folder. Careful if you have files in there already, as the CMS may overwrite them.

If you are manually installing the CMS, then you can obviously put the files in the public_html folder (again, be careful of overwriting files that you already have there).

Then, you need to create your splash page. Hostony's Apache servers are configured to accept index.htm index.html index.php (and probably others) as defualt index pages. You will have to find out which one comes highest in the priority list and then use that extension as your splash page.

Does this make sense?

Hostony, what is the order in which index pages are acessed. Which .ext should they use to make sure the page is loaded first when someone accesses their domain.

I am interested in moving my site from shared hosting to VPS hosting. Would support be able to move my web pages, databases, etc?

I have a few scripts installed through Fantastico as well that need moved: 1 Moodle installation and 1 Drupal installation. Can those be moved?

Please let me know what the process would be.

Thanks.

as the 3rd hostony customer who asked for ruby on rails, i would love for it to be installed on server14.

see my post here: http://forum.hostony.com/index.php?showtopic=4016&hl=ruby<BR>

WebDAV can be installed only on VPS. We don't offer WebDAV on the shared servers.

Slavik already mentioned that above.

I was just asking for some guidelines on how it would be done.

I've used it quite extensively in the past. What do you want to know? I think its silly that its not an option on a shared hosting plan as it can be installed as mod_dav and controlled on a perdomain basis very easily.

I guess I was interested in how to go about installing and configuring it. Are there different packages you can use for WebDAV?

thanks for the info. does anyone know anything about WebDAV? it seems like a great technology for the web, but not necessarily that easy to administer.

you are probably using a shared hosting plan. the server you are on actually has a name that is something like server22.bigfasthost.com. when your e-mail program notices that this is different than the name on the certificate, you get the error which you described below. some e-mail programs let you hide this error so you don't have to keep clicking ok.

aside from that, i am out of ideas.

hostony support has indicated the ruby on rails will only be installed for those customers on the virtual dedicated server (sometimes written VPS) or dedicated server customers.

hostony, time to get on board, other web hosts are meeting this request for service. see dreamhost.com

I am trying to restrict directories on my web server, but want to use an external LDAP server to check credentials. I have tried a few different example from the web with no success. I am wondering if Apache as it is can support this LDAP authentication. This is the code I am including in the .htaccess file:
CODE
order deny,allow
deny from all
AuthType Basic
AuthName "My LDAP Auth"
AuthLDAP on
AuthLDAPServer ldap://myserver.org
AuthLDAPBase "cn=users,dc=MyServer,dc=org"
require valid-user

I also found this link, but the code from there doesn't work either.

Any ideas?

thank you both so much for your help. your code tweaks worked perfectly. the sprintf was a remnant of trying to use dreamweaver's sql wizard. i don't know much sql code so am not even sure what it does. at this point, i am not going to mess with it since everything is working.

thanks again, you saved me the hassle of creating about 50 more pages by being able to make this one page dynamically.

CODE
$query_Recordset1 = sprintf("SELECT `first`, `last`, ".$_GET["course"].", `id` FROM registration0506
WHERE ".$_GET["course"]." = ".$_GET['coursename']."", $colname_Recordset1);

ok, this is the code. part made by me, part made my dreamweaver.

you can see that i want to get the data stored in first, last, id, and also for a 4th column which i want to pull from the $_GET["course"].

Then, I want it to use the WHERE statement to only show students who match the particular coursename. In my example, the course (name of column) might be 8math and the coursename would be AlgebraI.

With the current code, I get the following error passing the course=8math and coursname=AlgebraI parameters: "Unknown column 'AdvancedAlgebraI' in 'where clause'"

It seems that it is trying to use the coursename for the DB column name instead of comparing it to the values inside the column name.

Thanks to all for their help.

When i try to use your line for
CODE
'.$_GET['VARIABLE'].'
, I get the following error message:
QUOTE
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or T_NUM_STRING

It seems to not parse that entry properly. I tried putting the $_GET in {} as well, but that didn't work. I am trying to basically ask it to filter WHERE column_name_variable = course_name.

What I believe would help is if I could use a variable in the SELECT statment. The select statement might be something like:
SELECT `first`, `last`, VARIABLE, id FROM registrationTable WHERE VARIABLE = (somehow take a parameter passed from the last page) remembering where VARIABLE is not a value, but the name of a column.
