Plan Upgrade. Now all shared plans are Multidomain hosting enabled.

We are pleased to allow Hostony.com customers to experience the power and savings of multinomial hosting for all our customers.

On November 23, 2005, we upgraded our shared hosting plans. The new plans offer almost twice more disk space and bandwidth and allow our customers to share allotted resources between their domains.

Here is the deal:

Special package:

Host UNLIMITED Domains
15 000 Mb disk space
200 Gb bandwidth
from $6.95/mo

Profi package:

Host 10 domains
10 000 disk space
100 Gb bandwidth
from $4.95/mo

Commerce package:

Dedicated IP
Host UNLIMITED Domains
20 000 disk space
300 Gb bandwidth
from $4.95/mo

Many of our servers were upgraded this Monday. One or two HDDs were added to most of them. That enables us to offer our current customers to get an advantage of our upgraded plans. Also we have added 5 new 64 Bit Dell Dual Xeon servers with 300 Gb SCSI HDDs to our network.

Upcoming upgrades.

Next week we plan to add 3.6 Terabyte backup storage server to our local network in order to be able to do incremental weekly backups for our customers hosted at the new facility in Tampa, FL.

Two new Dual Opteron 248 Servers with 8 Gb of RAM and 8x73Gb SCSI HDDs in RAID 10 will be also added next week. RAID10 storage array survives even if 4 out of 8 HDDs are corrupted. New servers will be 2-2.5 times faster than 32-bit Intel Xeon we are using now.

We’ll upgrade plans for current users within 2 week period.

Many thanks for your continuous support of Hostony.

Now SWSoft is working at the server fixing Virtuozzo. When Virtuozzo update was installed on the server that was intended to prevent problems with teh server the server went down and corrupted HDD.

SWSoft had no clue what it could make it to fail and were unable to give us any advise. Now they are working on istalling virtuozzo to the new HDD. They will probably need an hour to complete. Then it will require additional 2-3 hours to load OS templates on the server and mount VZ partition with VPS server data.

We suppose that VZ partition was fixed by fsck and it won't require data restore from backups. It should save a lot of time.

We'll compensate our customers for downtime.

All domain names that are provided for free are renewed automatically by our billing system.

But it never hurts to double check whetehr your domain name is there and configured to be renewed. Please open a billing trouble ticket and ask to check this for you.

Just forfot to mentioned that we already moved away the customer who was a target of the attack on this server about 10 hours ago, but DDOS to the server ip continues.

The server exeprienced lack of kernel semaphores because of DDOS. So we had to increase number of semaphores and reboot the server.

The server is protected with dedicated Cisco guard but some of the requests reach it because they are formed as normal httpd requests we tweaked apache to ignore them at night and it allowed spache to serve sites and not to be pumped with atackers requests. But it reuired to much kernel semaphores to filter off requests that get to the server.

As I write this I checked all teh sites on the server and they load ok.

We have just had a hack on server 35.

Hacker's files were removed.
We decided to go ahead and to recompile php with suexec support in order to better secure the server as the hack was actually made by using bad written php script of one of our customers.

Some users may need to tweak their php scripts or put their own php.ini in their folder to make scripts working.

Should you have any problems please contact our support.

As for now we have only 2 servers left that don't have suexec enabled and they will have php reconpiled soon.

HDD upgrades. Servers: 11, 22, 23, 26,27, 29, 31

We'll be adding additional HDDs on these servers this weekend in order to increase storage capacity and be able to make user data backups on those servers.

The expected downtime is 15-25 minutes required to mount HDD to the server, mount it to the rack and load OS.

This maintanance should double storage capacity of the above mentioned servers.

It was down for about 20 minutes when attack hit the server. We were able to find the customer who attracked the attack and point his domain elsewhere. The server is running smoothy for about last 10 hours. And the load is verly low 0.3-0.5

Also we had reconfigured php to work in suexec while fighting the attack and some users may need to reconfigure their php scripts to be compatible with suexec. So if some of your php scripts don't work p[leasecontact our support for the help.

Just a copy of my post to the similar thread in other forum.

We are aware that we have 3 problematic servers and already have ordered Dell 2850 Dual Xeons with 300Gb SCSIs HDDs .We should get them today in the morning and configure by Monday. Once they are configured we'll be moving customers from server 15, 21 and win4.

We already ordered a new line of servers for VPS hosting. They are Dual Opterons 248 with 8 Gig RAM and 8x 73Gb SCSI drives in RAID10.
The new server will be 2.5 times faster than our current servers config as need servers use all the power of 64bi computing of AMD Opterons and 8 SCSI HDDS in RAID10 will outperform RAID5 3 HDD configs. To the top RAID 10 can survive even when 4 out 8 HDDs fail.

It is not only new servers that will be new we already get a deal for the colo at A class datacenter in Tampa, FL for building our new infrastructure. All new servers will be located there. The main idea is to build the infrastructure that will allow us to omit problems we had now and to be able to better and faster fix problems that may occur.

All new racks have 2x20 AMP power feeds, all new servers will be connected via power strips that will allow remote hard and soft server reboots all servers will be connected to the KVM switch that itself will be connected to the IP KVM. It will decrease time required to access the box when serious failure occurs and will allow helpdesk support to help onsite techs while they are fixing OS problems and be able to fix more problems themselves.

Also all servers in the rack will be put in the private network and connected via GIG_E feed to the 3.2 TB NAS storage server. Thus we’ll be able to make double backups for user data. Daily backups will be done to the secondary SCSI HDD connected to the server and weekly backups will be done to the local storage server.

The benefits:

1. We’ll be able to do daily backups
2. Daily backups won’t overload the server as we’ll be using rsync program to copy only the files that were updated within last day. And daily backup should take no more 15-30 min. The load will be at around 8, but it should not create many problems because we’ll do daily backups at night when server will be less loaded.
3. GIG_E line to the storage server should greatly increase performance of the weekly backups. Now we get a lot of problems when weekly backups occurs because server cannot send them fast enough over 100 Mbit connection and they are cached on local HDD jeopardizing all free space. New 300Gb SCSI HDDs should also help as they are 4 times bigger that 73 Gb SCSIs that we are using now.
4. We have developed cumulative backup system and having a plenty of network storage should enable us to keep weekly backups for 4-6 weeks and be able to restore customer’s data in the state they were 3 or 4 weeks ago by request.

New backup system will also improve our recovery plans. When we had OS or HDD failure the most time we had to wait for the data to be copied from the off server backup. For 100 Gb -150 of data over a 100 Mbit connection it may take up to 24 hours just for data to be copied. Having exactly the same SCSI drive with daily backuped data in 90% cases we can start to restore server immediately on the secondary drive without waiting for the customer data to be copied. That’s why we decided not to cut corners and have exactly the same #)) Gb SCSI drives both for the master and secondary drive.

On the other hand in case when server dies because of the hacker backups on the secondary drive may be lost. That’s why we make offsite backups of the data to the storage server.
So, it should greatly improve our potential to provide good service to our customers as well as faster recovery from the problems. Not many hosts implemented something similar.

We are working for almost 5 weeks on the new infrastructure – negotiating, testing, software tweaks, etc. And I don’t want to tell that things will magically change on Monday. Just I want you to know that we Do work on solving our problems.

Also I want you assure that we won’t make hassle by moving everybody to the new infrastructure. Only servers that have repeated problems will be moved. For now just server15, 21 and win4. And there should not be any downtime involved with this as we’ll first copy the date and only then change DNS entries. The exact time for this will be announced later.

Also when new infrastructure will be build we’ll announce some sweet deals for our customers.

Dear Sir,

I understand your frustration, but I hope you understand that nature of the chats like ICQ AIM MSN allows to communicate only with one person at a time holding on others. There is no way to allocate more staff to the same ICQ UIN or AIM.

Also there is a problem sending messages to your AIM. Often we see your AIM 'offline' and cannot respond while we continue getting messages from you.
We have notified you about it several times already.

We have instant messangers for the cases when problem requires online interaction between our support and the customers and it is hard to resolve the issue in other way. Also, online chat is a good substitution for the IM.

Trouble tickets has #1 priority and allow to track all activities. That also allows our supervisor to keep an eye on the work of our support and help the customer when it is needed.

For the issues like yours I would recommend to open a trouble ticket clearly stating the issue and naming all domain names and problems you experience as well as what you want to achieve at the end. That will allow our support to serve you better and faster.

Thank you for understanding.

We do have hardware firewal filtering and it is enabled for the server. The server was hit with 200Mb+ of bandwidth. In case there were no protection it would be down all the time.

The filtering system we have allows for the attacks producing up to 100Mbit of bandwidth to be almost unnoticable for the customers.

Also each server has a software firewall on each server. it is not as efficient as hardware, but it helps to protect ports on the server when hackers just try to probe the server.

The bad thing with DDOS attack is that you can barely do anything about it, but just to filter tons of packets attacking the server.

2checkout accepts international businesses and has support for multicurrency wire transfers to the vendors. All you have to ask your bank is their US correspondant bank name and ABA number of the correspondant bank. They send out money twice a month on 1 and 15.

We are transferring servers account by account. At first we copy account and send a letter to the user to verify whether everything is ok and update DNS. The process already goes for 2 weeks and will take some more.

We don't move servers at one day or on certain date becuse we want ahve time to check account by account that everything is rigt and to avoid crouds of customers watching to shoot our buts smile.gif

We also don't send announce in forums because we work personally with each account and notify each user personally when we are working on his account. This allows us to avoid hassle caused by public announce because there will be some dosen of users who will think that they are already moved , some that want to be moved first, etc.

Thank you for understanding.

Server 22 is up now. Jornalling file system is not a panaceya. It reduces file system errors but doen't guarantees that it won,t ever occur in case stack or buffer overflow, etc.

In order to protect our servers and close multiple security holes that were recently discovered in php 4/5 we'll be performing emergency upgrades of php on all our servers through 20-21 December.

Estimated downtime: 1-5 minutes required for apache+php to be restarted.

Thank you all of you for your patience and understanding.

-= Security Advisory =-

Advisory: Multiple vulnerabilities within PHP 4/5
Release Date: 2004/12/15
Last Modified: 2004/12/15
Author: Stefan Esser [sesser@php.net]Application: PHP4 <= 4.3.9
PHP5 <= 5.0.2
Severity: Several vulnerabilities within PHP allow
local and remote execution of arbitrary code
Risk: Critical
Vendor Status: Vendor has released bugfixed versions.
References: http://www.hardened-php.net/advisories/012004.txt

Overview:

PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is
especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML.

During the development of Hardened-PHP which adds security hardening
features to the PHP codebase, several vulnerabilities within PHP
were discovered that reach from bufferoverflows, over information
leak vulnerabilities and path truncation vulnerabilities to
safe_mode restriction bypass vulnerabilities.

Details:

[01 - pack() - integer overflow leading to heap bufferoverflow ]

Insufficient validation of the parameters passed to pack() can
lead to a heap overflow which can be used to execute arbitrary
code from within a PHP script. This enables an attacker to
bypass safe_mode restrictions and execute arbitrary code with
the permissions of the webserver. Due to the nature of this
function it is unlikely that a script accidently exposes it to
remote attackers.

[02 - unpack() - integer overflow leading to heap info leak ]

Insufficient validation of the parameters passed to unpack() can
lead to a heap information leak which can be used to retrieve
secret data from the apache process. Additionally a skilled
local attacker could use this vulnerability in combination with
01 to bypass heap canary protection systems. Similiar to 01 this
function is usually not used on user supplied data within
webapplications.

[03 - safe_mode_exec_dir bypass in multithreaded PHP ]

When safe_mode is activated within PHP, it is only allowed to
execute commands within the configured safe_mode_exec_dir.
Unfourtunately PHP does prepend a "cd [currentdir] ;" to any
executed command when a PHP is running on a multithreaded unix
webserver (f.e. some installations of Apache2). Because the name
of the current directory is prepended directly a local attacker
may bypass safe_mode_exec_dir restrictions by injecting shell-
commands into the current directory name.

[04 - safe_mode bypass through path truncation ]

The safe_mode checks silently truncated the file path at MAXPATHLEN
bytes before passing it to realpath(). In combination with certain
malfunctional implementations of realpath() f.e. within glibc this
allows crafting a filepath that pass the safe_mode check although
it points to a file that should fail the safe_mode check.

[05 - path truncation in realpath() ]

PHP uses realpath() within several places to get the real path
of files. Unfourtunately some implementations of realpath() silently
truncate overlong filenames (f.e. OpenBSD, and older NetBSD/FreeBSD)
This can lead to arbitrary file include vulnerabilities if something
like "include "modules/$userinput/config.inc.php"; is used on such
systems.

[06 - unserialize() - wrong handling of negative references ]

The variable unserializer could be fooled with negative references
to add false zvalues to hashtables. When those hashtables get
destroyed this can lead to efree()s of arbitrary memory addresses
which can result in arbitrary code execution. (Unless Hardened-PHP's
memory manager canaries are activated)

[07 - unserialize() - wrong handling of references to freed data ]

Additionally to bug 06 the previous version of the variable
unserializer allowed setting references to already freed entries in
the variable hash. A skilled attacker can exploit this to create
an universal string that will pass execution to an arbitrary
memory address when it is passed to unserialize(). For AMD64 systems
it was even possible to developed a string that directly passes
execution to shellcode contained in the string itself.

It is necessary to understand that these strings can exploit a
bunch of popular PHP applications remotely because they pass f.e.
cookie content to unserialize().

Examples of vulnerable scripts:

- phpBB2
- Invision Board
- vBulletin
- Woltlab Burning Board 2.x
- Serendipity Weblog
- phpAds(New)
- ...

Proof of Concept:

The Hardened-PHP project is not going to release exploits for any
of these vulnerabilities to the public.

CVE Information:

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has
assigned the name CAN-2004-1018 to issues 01, 02, the name
CAN-2004-1019 to issues 06, 07, the name CAN-2004-1063 to issue 03
and the name CAN-2004-1064 to issues 04, 05.

Recommendation:

It is strongly recommended to upgrade to the new PHP-Releases as
soon as possible, because a lot of PHP applications expose the
easy to exploit unserialize() vulnerability to remote attackers.
Additionally we always recommend to run PHP with the Hardened-PHP
patch applied.
